Welcome to Black Swamp Conservancy

The mission of Black Swamp Conservancy is to encourage conservation and protection of natural and agricultural lands in Northwest Ohio for the benefit of future generations.

Established as a non-profit organization in 1993, Black Swamp is one of more than 1,100 land trusts across the country. Scores of dedicated volunteers assist our small staff in their work. What do they do?

  • raise awareness of land conservation in general and the conservancy's work in particular;
  • educate locate attorneys and other professionals about conservation easements;
  • help farmers apply for Ohio's Agricultural Easement Purchase Program;
  • help other Northwest Ohio landowners -- both individuals and organizations -- create perpetual easements to protect land that has significant conservation value; and
  • monitor Black Swamp Conservancy's 7,000 acres of easement properties from Catawba Island to Williams County.

Rob Krain, Black Swamp's stewardship manager,

vancy property in Paulding County described as
"perhaps the healthiest remaining example of the
Great Black Swamp," which once extended from
Sandusky to Ft. Wayne.
